Although groundbreaking for Washington Hall began in May of 2006, its idea was conceived by the DTS Board, Executive Committee and Housing staff in 2001, when Swiss Tower (designed for married students) first opened its doors. This new seven-floor single-student apartment building took two years to complete; its first occupants moved in at the end of May, 2008.

Drew Williams, Director of DTS Housing, said DTS wanted more than "a place to put students," so the building was designed to provide a supportive Christian community, a place where the Holy Spirit could effectively work in students' lives before they faced the challenges of full-time ministry. As Seminary can, at times, potentially isolate students, DTS chose a building design with many community areas to cultivate the dynamic relationships so vital to spiritual growth.

Washington Hall, on the corner of Swiss and Washington Avenues, offers an outdoor pool and grill area, sixth-floor atrium, indoor lounges, two small media rooms, pool tables, air hockey, an indoor volleyball/basketball court, a computer lab, research library, and group study rooms. Eating, playing, and studying together will provide a foundation for building lifetime friendships.

The common areas are concentrated in the center of the building and the one- and two-bedroom apartments surround the perimeter. The main entrance is flanked by rusted steel cutouts of the eastern and western hemispheres, with Acts 1:8 and Revelation 5:9 recessed in the cast stone panels behind them. The walls in the common areas on every floor are brightened by images from around the world, photographed by several DTS alumni.

Dallas Seminary hopes its single students will accrue many fond memories and forge lasting friendships during their residence at Washington Hall.
