It was not long ago that I was sitting in your place, browsing the DTS website and trying to discern whether God was really calling me to seminary. Looking back, it is crazy to think about the places that God has taken me once I was ready to listen to Him.
When I first set foot on campus, I assumed that every student at DTS would be in their mid 20s, mostly from the United States, training to become pastors. I was thrilled to find a wide variety of people from all walks of life, representing many countries from around the world and pursuing training in various areas of ministry. In fact, during my first semester, I could not believe the emphasis that Dr. Howard Hendricks and others placed on embracing our unique roles in the mission of God. It has been a privilege to learn from not only a diverse student body, but diverse faculty as well.
It can be both exciting and frustrating when wrestling with the Lord about seminary. Be still, and know that He is God. We all play a unique role in God’s plan for His Kingdom. If you have any questions or would like to find out more about how God called me into seminary, feel free to contact me.
What are your hobbies or outside interests?
I love reading, playing basketball and taking my wife on coffee dates.
What made you decide to go to DTS?
Aside from the depth and breadth of the academic programs at DTS, I was influenced by many DTS graduates who communicated clearly, taught the Bible well and cherished their relationship with God.
What do you do on your day off?
Too often, I prepare myself for my next day of work! I spend time reading at coffee shops, catching up on sports news and calling friends and family.
What are your favorite foods?
FREE food (and Chipotle burritos with guacamole).
What is your favorite television show of all time?
I am a very efficient person who likes to accomplish as much as possible each day—which is why I love watching 24. Not to mention, he always manages to save the country from terrorists within the last 30 minutes of his day. Jack Bauer rocks!
What is the best part about working in the DTS admissions office?
Having the opportunity to love, listen to and lead prospective students as they navigate through the often unclear waters of God’s will for their lives (as it relates to seminary, of course!).
What is your favorite piece of literature?
Favorite?! I have so many favorites! The book that has had the most impact on my life is, When I Don’t Desire God by John Piper. It was the first book that I had ever read from cover to cover. God used it to stir up a hunger for Truth and ignite a love for reading in my life.
What is your favorite quote?
“Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.” – Philippians 2:12-13
What is your favorite musical artist/group/genre of music?
I do enjoy a wide variety of music, but over the past year I have started listening to a lot of Christian hip hop – Lecrae, Flame, Sho Baraka, The Ambassador, Tedashii, Trip Lee. I love the truth these guys drop in their lyrics and they know how to get your head bobbin’!
Who is the person you admire most and why?
Other than Jesus, I admire my close friend, Kenji. Though not perfect, he has embodied what it means to love God and love others.
Who is your favorite Bible character and why?
Other than Jesus, Joshua. Joshua’s leadership began and ended with a healthy fear of the Lord.
If you could have superhero powers, what would they be?
I would love to be able to read minds. It would make relationships and communication easier and would freak people out!
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?
If it were possible, I would love to live at the North Pole.
