MILITARY WIFE GRADUATES FROM DALLAS SEMINARY’S
NEW SAN ANTONIO LOCATION

DALLAS, TX—Mitzi Roberts, a military wife and mother of two teenagers, is an example of the kind of student attending Dallas Theological Seminary’s (DTS) extension program in San Antonio.

Roberts, who graduated with a master’s degree in Christian Education this May, said that DTS’s nontraditional class formats fit her family schedule. “I have also appreciated the opportunity for my husband to audit courses for such a reasonable cost,” she added.

Roberts’s interest in women’s ministry began in Italy, where she and her husband were stationed. “I loved every minute of it,” she said, “and I realized that was a call by God on my life. The head chaplain of the U.S. Army Chaplain Corps encouraged me to go to seminary.” At first Roberts searched for an online program, but preferred “the personal interaction of a traditional classroom.”

When the military ordered her husband to San Antonio in 2004, Roberts decided “the time was right” to begin seminary.

“I always wanted to go to DTS,” she said, “but never thought it was a possibility.” Then she discovered DTS offered courses in San Antonio and “everything came together.”

DTS’s San Antonio extension offers courses leading to the Certificate of Graduate Studies (C.G.S.) and the Master of Arts (Biblical Studies). Roberts worked with DTS’s administration to complete a Master of Arts in Christian Education by taking some online courses as well as courses at the Houston and Dallas campuses.

By moving the extension site to Community Bible Church in San Antonio, John Contoveros, Associate Director of Enrollment Services, believes awareness of the San Antonio program will increase by drawing on “a large, active membership from which the Lord may call leaders to pursue a theological education,” he said.

“With the short, intensive courses offered at the main campus and the weekend format courses offered at the Houston extension, it’s all just fallen into place,” Roberts said of her seminary training. “It hasn’t been that difficult. It has required a little planning, but it’s been worth it.

And while the future is unclear, Roberts plans to minister to military families of seriously wounded veterans at the Brooke Army Medical Center.

Students interested in seminary education can apply online at www.dts.edu/admissions. The application deadline for the fall semester is July 1.
