Cultural Engagement Tip: It’s Hard Not to Get into Spiritual Conversations
Do you ever feel hesitant to engage that skeptical friend, relative or coworker? Some Christians feel like people are generally less interested in spiritual conversations today. But Lee Strobel has discovered that this isn’t always true in everyday conversations.
In fact, he says, “I find people are so easy to engage in spiritual conversations---much more today than even 20 years ago.” He also suggests that we’re often more afraid of talking about spiritual things than our skeptical friends are:
“It’s almost like, you know, when I was a little kid. If I found a spider in my room, and I freaked out: ‘Mom! Mom! There’s a spider in my room!’ And she would always say, ‘Hey, the spider’s more afraid of you than you are of it.’
Well, in culture today, I think Christians shrink back because they think people aren’t going to be interested in talking about spiritual matters or they’re kind of beyond that. Or we’re in a post-religious society and so forth.
When the reality is, people are really interested in this and it’s very easy to engage. And I find that, as I travel, or as I speak with people along the way of life, sometimes it’s hard not to get into a spiritual conversation these days.”
