Leadership vs. Management

by Kymberli Cook on August 8, 2013

Leadership Checkpoint: Are you really leading?

Being in charge does not make you a leader. Having responsibilities for a long time does not make you one either. Rather, a leader emerges amidst the responsibilities. Certain actions within those tasks distinguish you as a leader from merely managing responsibilities

Compare each list, then briefly reflect on your actions in your areas of responsibility. If you are a manager, are you trying to be a leader while shirking your management responsibilities? If you are a leader, do you simply manage your workplace, ministry or family?

This article is adapted from Howard Hendricks' curriculum, The Dynamics of Leadership, in which he thoroughly covers this tension and many more issues in leadership. It is an outstanding resource and is available today!
