DaVinci Code Debate

Dear Seminary family,

I want to take a moment and inform you of an event that is coming up in New York City. This Monday, May 15, Dr. Darrell Bock, Research Professor of New Testament Studies and Professor of Spiritual Development and Culture, will participate in a debate concerning the Da Vinci Code. The debate is hosted by Chosen People Ministries. ABC is also following the story and may give a brief covering of the event in the days to come. The debates primary purpose is to address the issues surrounding the upcoming movie release and to present sincere, yet differing, dialog concerning the accusations made by Dan Brown in reference to the history of the church and basic orthodoxy.

Please note that this is a debate. There will be many views and debate participants that do not represent the Seminary or evangelicalism. In fact, it would be good for you to remember that the event is not hosted or endorsed by Dallas Seminary. However, I pass this information along because I feel there is great benefit to you as a resource opportunity. Why? Because the questions and comments made at the debate are the same ones you will experience in dialog with your neighbors. As you know, the book has caused many water cooler discussions about Christianity in general. I urge you to use such opportunities to speak boldly for Christ. As Peter says, But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have (1 Pet 3:15a).

Many of you are now asking, How can I view the debate? To make the event available as a resource, the debate will be presented live via the web. All you must have is broadband access. The event is live at 7:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Timeso adjust to your time zone accordingly. The web stream is completely free, so feel free to pass this along to your various constituencies if you think they would benefit from it. Again, the debate is this Monday, May 15, at 7:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Please know that I am praying for you and the opportunities the Lord will give you in the days ahead. I pray such resources will help you be better prepared to speak, when asked.
