In 1683, John Sobieski, a seasoned soldier, successfully defended the walls of Vienna from the Turks. He reported his victory to the Pope with a paraphrase of Ceasar’s: “I came; I saw; God conquered.” David, a teenage shepherd, shared the same confidence in the Lord’s ability to deliver the righteous when he confronted Goliath in 1Sam. 17:47 – “[A]nd all this assembly will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves. For the battle is the LORD’s, and he will deliver you into our hand.” Young or old, shepherd or soldier, the battle is the Lord’s. Not yours.
