Happiest of Endings
Professor J. R. R. Tolkien, born on this day, 1892, was grading a student’s exam, when, on finding a blank page, he scribbled, “In a hole in the ground, there lived a Hobbit,” and Bilbo Baggins was born. Many see deeper meanings in his works, but Tolkien said they simply offered a story with a happy ending. Paul reminds us in 1Cor. 15:54 – “Now when this perishable puts on the imperishable, and this mortal puts on immortality, then the saying that is written will happen, ‘Death has been swallowed up in victory.’” The Bible provides us with the happiest of endings, and it’s true!
