The End of My Cane
Baron George Jeffreys of Wem was an English judge, noted for his brutality. One day in court he pointed with his cane at a man about to be tried and said, “There is a rogue at the end of my cane.” To which the accused replied, “At which end, my lord?” The Lord knows that justice must always be balanced with love and compassion, lest it become brittle and legalistic. “I will commit myself to you forever; I will commit myself to you in righteousness and justice, in steadfast love and tender compassion. (Hos. 2:19) A judge’s robes must never muffle a compassionate heart.
