Seeing Psalm 107: Afflicted

by Aaron Switzer

Description
This is one in a series of four images (stock photographs manipulated in Photoshop) representing Psalm 107. In each one, the passage is considered through the eyes of someone in need of rescue (the reader). The Psalm depicts God as redeemer in a variety of situations, each one demonstrating that He is worthy of praise. Here we see verses 17-22. Look carefully at the grain of the wood and you will see three people. This represents those who have fallen victim to the consequences of their own sinful choices, drawing near to the gates of death. Two faces are in full expression of misery, but the third figure has noticed something on the horizon. She has begun to consider a truth about God (here an image suggestive of the prodigal son's return) and thinks that God might be able to redeem her too.
