The Anastasis
by Scot Pollok
Description
Christ is pictured in the center helping Adam and Eve out of their graves. Adam and Eve are represented because they are responsible for sin entering the world, and through sin-death (Rom 5:12). Because of Christ's resurrection, which is a kind of first fruits, all believers look forward to a bodily resurrection at Christ's return (1 Cor 15:21). Christ is standing on the gates of hell, as his resurrection sealed the coming victory over sin, death, and the devil (Rev 20:14). Daniel is pictured to the left because he was one prophet to clearly prophesy about the resurrection (Dan 12:1-2). Andrew is pictured because he was one disciple to initially recognize Jesus' Divinity (Jo 1:40-41). A mountain is split behind as Jesus will return to the Mount of Olives upon His return (Zech 14:4; Acts 1:11). Thus this simple icon contains an entire theology which is supremely valuable to every believer.
