English Proficiency / TOEFL
The demonstration of English proficiency is required of all applicants for whom (1) English is not their native or birth language or (2) who were not born in the United States of America. This applies even if the applicant is a United States citizen, has attended an American or English-speaking school, and/or is a long-time resident of an English-speaking country.
Applicants demonstrate their proficiency in English by submitting satisfactory scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), taken within two years of the date of application.
The minimum internet-based TOEFL score (iBT) is 85, with subscores of at least 22 in the speaking and listening sections, 20 in the writing/structure section, and 21 in the reading section.
The Admissions Committee strongly prefers that applicants take the internet-based TOEFL (iBT) or the IELTS (see below). If your location or circumstances require you to take the TOEFL Paper-delivered Test, please contact the Admissions Office prior to registering for the test.
Information about the TOEFL may be obtained from: www.ets.org/toefl. The TOEFL institution code for Dallas Theological Seminary is 6156.
A helpful study guide for the TOEFL can be found here.
The minimum score on the IELTS is 6.5, with subscores of at least 6.5 in the listening, reading, and speaking sections, and 6.0 in the writing section.
