A Prayer for President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and the New Administration of the United States of America
Dear Holy and Righteous God,
We come to you today through the name of Christ our Lord. Thank you that because of His sacrifice on the Cross, our salvation is firm. Thank you that our eternal “citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ” (Philippians 3:20).
God, we come to you today as earthly citizens that live in the United States of America. For some, this came through birth. For all, it is according to Your sovereign will. We acknowledge this not as entitled people but as those who recognize who we are and where you have placed us. Consequently, we are responsible to live here as good stewards in the likeness of Jesus.
As Christians who bear Your image and the name of Your Son, you call us to pray for our leaders. As the Apostle Paul states, “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth” (1 Tim 2:1–4).
So, today, on the day of the Inauguration for President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and those transitioning to new administrative posts, we petition You on their behalf.
We pray that
- You would be a real and abiding presence in their lives, and that they would look to You for direction.
- You would surround them with men and women that provide godly council.
- The decisions they make and how they lead will honor You and demonstrate care to a world in need.
- They would pursue peace and model civility in their words and actions.
Lord, we also pray that all people will strive to find common ground anchored in love for You and one another. And may Christ-followers in these United States wholeheartedly commit to praying for our leaders as your Word instructs. Help us to be people of prayer. Help us to be peacemakers. Our Father, please help our leaders.
We pray these things in Jesus’s name, Amen.

Mark M. Yarbrough
Dr. Mark Yarbrough serves as the sixth President of Dallas Theological Seminary and is a professor of Bible Exposition. He has been in a variety of positions during his tenure at DTS: Research Assistant to the President, Executive Director of Information Technology, Associate Dean for External Education, Vice President for Communications, Academic Dean, and Vice President of Academic Affairs.
His love for the classroom draws him to the Bible Exposition department where he serves as Professor. Along with his responsibilities of leading DTS, he serves as an elder of Centerpoint Church in Mesquite and travels extensively leading tours and speaking at conference centers. Mark has recently authored Jonah: Beyond the Tale of a Whale and Tidings of Comfort and Joy. He has been married for thirty years to Jennifer, his high school sweetheart. They have four adult children, one son-in-law, and reside in Sunnyvale, Texas.
